Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of 5. It is an avoidable accident, which could be prevented by adult supervision.
In honor of water safety month, we are sharing some essential swim safety information and top tips to keep children safe around the pool.
There is no substitute for adult supervision!
Children should never be left unattended by adults while they are swimming.
Drowning doesn’t look the way you think.
Don’t rely on a call for help or the way movies portray drowning to know how to recognize when a swimmer is in dancer. When a child is drowning, they are unable to scream or call for help. Always watch to make sure that your child’s nose and mouth are above the water.
No distractions when watching children!
In the time it takes you to answer a phone call, a child could drown. Never assume that someone else is watching; make specific assignments for who is watching and always be accountable for watching your children. The person watching the children should never be distracted by their cell phone, reading a book, or any thing else.
